The motto of the United States Coast Guard is "Semper Paratus," which means "Always Ready". The Coast Guard is on duty 365 days a year.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the United States Coast Guard is to ensure our Nation's maritime safety, security and stewardship. We will serve our Nation through the selfless performance of our missions. We will honor our duty to protect those we serve and those who serve with us. The Coast Guard is a military service in the Department of Homeland Security, and has both civilian and military responsibilities.
The Coast Guard's duties include:
• Protecting the nation's ports, waterways, and harbors
• Enforcing the law and stopping criminals, drug dealers, and terrorists
• Teaching maritime safety and rescuing people in the water
• Breaking up ice to keep waterways clear for travel and commerce
• Protecting the nation's economic prosperity, national security, and border
