1636 - The Massachusetts Bay Colony organized the first militia regiments in North America on December 13, 1636. These regiments are the oldest units in the U.S. military today.

1792 - The Militia Act required states to register men between the ages of 18 and 44 for state militias.

1824 - Some New York State militia units used the title "National Guard" for the first time.

1878 - The National Guard Association of the United States was formed, and Congress increased funding for the militia.

1903 - "National Guard" became the standard title for the militia across the country.

1911 - The first "Air Guard" flight was flown by a Guardsman from New York's 1st Signal Company.

1933 - The National Guard became specifically defined as reserve forces under the control of both the state and federal governments.

Today, the National Guard is a vital part of the U.S. military. National Guard soldiers are part-time military members who also hold civilian jobs or attend college. They can be called upon by the president or a governor at any time to respond to emergencies, combat missions, and more.
